So why the long bracket, and what's with the bend?
Pendulum mass and axle alignment!
I didn't want to have to bolt or otherwise fasten the motor to anything. It had to just drop on and pull off the axle easily. So the mass of the long bracket keeps everything upright. Gravity keeps the long end down, preventing the motor from free-rotating!
And the bend aligns the motor axis with the axle axis when it free-hanging. You'll see better in following photos.
