The original pin (at left) is pretty beat up.

The big divot in the center of it is where it was tack-welded inside the control shaft.

Not sure if this weld is absolutely necessary, but was probably done to ensure that the pin could not inadvertently rotate in the control shaft and prevent engagement in the shift arm collar slots.
